Treating The Deficient Refer Plant
There are some conditions that can occur that will require the person growing the crop to add certain nutrients to keep the plants healthy. The usual way the person will know there is something wrong with the plants is through their leaves. The leaves of the refer plant can turn yellow, curl or have other appearances that will determine what they lack in nutrients.
If the large leaves on the refer plant begin to turn yellow, while the smaller leaves remain green it is a sign that the plants are lacking nitrogen. This can be added one of two ways to the plants, either by using an organic fertilizer or by adding nitrate of soda.
When the more mature refer leaves begin to have a yellow color near or in the veins they are lacking magnesium and will need plant food or fertilizer to correct this situation before it gets out of hand and damages the plants.
Refer leaves that curl on the edges or turn dark have a phosphorus deficiency and with treated with plant food or fertilizer that contain phosphorus it will clear this condition up on the plant. This can also be the problem that needs to be corrected if the leaves begin to have a purple hue or have edges that turn a dark gray.
These are problems that if left uncorrected it can seriously affect the amount of harvested product the plants will provide.
